ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST
A LICK OF PAINT
One of the cheapest yet most effective ways to create an accent wall is through bold paint colors. Choose a hue that contrasts with the rest of the room, drawing the eye and creating a focal point. For a dramatic look, consider deep, jewel tones like cerulean blue or olive green. If you prefer a lighter touch, opt for pastel shades or bright, cheerful colors. Just make sure you select a color that still complements your existing decor, while adding a pop of interest.
Speaking of paint, have we mentioned limewash? This beautiful, textural finish can instantly elevate a room, no contractors necessary! And finally, don’t forget about your ceiling – it’s what we like to call the fifth wall. You can really dial up the impact of an accent wall by also painting the ceiling adjoining it in the same colour.

WONDROUS WALLPAPER
If you know us, you know we never ever design a project without wallpaper! It’s simply unthinkable. We love it for its versatility; there is a truly mind-boggling array of patterns and finishes available these days. From intricate prints to large-scale murals, wallpaper can infuse a room with character and style. Floral designs, metallic finishes, and tropical motifs are all popular choices that can set the tone for the entire space. For a more contemporary look, consider abstract patterns or monochromatic designs that add depth without overwhelming the room.
Not keen on pattern? Consider textured wallpapers which come in a wide range of designs, from subtle grasscloth to chunky jute and raffia. Textured wallpaper accent walls work particularly well in spaces where you want to create a cozy, inviting atmosphere, such as bedrooms and living rooms. We used a grasscloth design by Wallhub to beautiful effect in a recent master bedroom feature wall, pictured below right.
WARM WOOD
If you’d like a refined yet subtle accent wall, there’s no better option than wood. Wooden walls bring warmth and natural beauty to any space. Reclaimed wood and wood paneling are timeless options that can be tailored to suit various design styles. For a rustic or farmhouse aesthetic, reclaimed barn wood adds character and history. For a modern twist, consider vertical wood slats or geometric wood paneling to create a striking visual effect.
Fluted and ribbed wooden laminate panels, such as the ones by Chroma Furnishing, are another great way to go contemporary with your look. These panels are super easy to install and are malleable too, making them great for overlaying onto existing walls or curved corners. We love doing a fluted wooden TV accent wall, as seen in our Rivière project above left.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Want something totally unique and different? Think of your accent wall as a canvas for artistic expression. Consider commissioning a mural or creating a gallery wall with your favorite artwork. Don’t be afraid to work in mixed materials such as metal, stone and glass to add further depth and dimension. Fabric is another underused yet versatile hero when it comes to wall furnishings. Frame a large tapestry to serve as a focal point in the room, or make use of upholstered panels and extended headboards to create a soft, cozy feel. Fabric panels are actually one of our favourite ways to dress up a bedroom wall in an unobtrusive yet thoughtful manner.
Accent walls are a supremely versatile and impactful way to infuse your home with personality. By experimenting with colors, textures, and lighting, you can create striking focal points that elevate the overall aesthetic of your rooms.
