FIRST THINGS FIRST, THE DINING TABLE
The dining table is the centerpiece of any dining room. Choose a table that suits your lifestyle and the size of your space. For a more intimate setting, round tables are perfect as they encourage conversation and a cozy atmosphere. If you often entertain larger groups, a rectangular or extendable table provides flexibility and functionality. Material matters too; consider wood for a warm, timeless look or stone for a sleeker touch. Material is just as important when picking chairs: upholstered chairs serve as the perfect canvas to get creative with textile and pattern, while wooden or metal chairs create a chic, industrial vibe.
Most importantly, make sure to measure your dimensions carefully before you order! The last thing anyone wants is to be rubbing elbows (literally) with their dinner guests. If you’re short on space but want to maximize seating, consider a dining bench instead of chairs. Benches offer a lot of flexibility and are the perfect opportunity to incorporate a beautiful fabric backrest!
LIGHTING TO SET THE MOOD
Lighting plays a crucial role in dining room design, setting the mood and enhancing the overall ambiance. A statement chandelier or pendant light above the dining table (see below right) can double as a work of art and work as a focal point for the whole room. If you aren’t keen on a statement piece, concealed LED lights work beautifully for a more modern look and can be incorporated in all sorts of creative ways. Finally, consider investing in dimmable lighting to adjust the brightness according to the occasion, whether it’s a casual family dinner or an elegant dinner party.

ELLE DECOR
Functional and Aesthetic Storage
Storage in the dining room needs to be both practical and decorative. Buffets, sideboards, and cabinets provide ample space for storing dinnerware, glassware, and linens while offering a surface for displaying decor. One of our go-to dining room design ideas is to add a statement built-in sideboard (as seen in our Interlace project above left) that perfectly encapsulates the practical yet beautiful ethos we’re going for. Not enough room for a cabinet? Open shelving can showcase your collection of beautiful dishes and glassware just as well, in a delightfully casual boho-chic style.
Pay Attention to Flooring
The right flooring can enhance the overall look and feel of your dining space. Hardwood floors offer classic, elegant appeal, while tiles or stone can bring in a contemporary touch. If your dining area isn’t already sectioned off from the rest of the living room, consider adding a rug under the dining table to demarcate the space and add warmth. However, it’s important to ensure the rug is large enough to fit all chairs, even when pulled out, to maintain a cohesive look. Ps. check out our rug size guide to learn more!
ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST
PERSONALIZE WITH UNIQUE TOUCHES
Personalization is the key to creating a truly unique and inviting space. Artwork and decor add character to your dining room and make it uniquely yours. Hang a piece of statement art right next to the table to serve as a focal point and create a conversation piece. Mirrors can also be used to reflect light and make the space feel larger. Incorporate decorative items such as vases, candles, or a stylish centerpiece to enhance the table setting and overall decor. And never underestimate the impact of a table runner!
