Living Room: Finding the Right Fit
In the living room, a well-proportioned rug can help tie your look together and also demarcate it from other areas in the same room, such as your dining or kitchen space. When selecting your rug size, consider the following:
- Under Furniture: The rug should be large enough to fit under the front legs of your furniture, such as sofas and chairs, to create a cohesive seating area. We often see clients push their rug all the way to the back legs of the sofa, which unnecessarily wastes precious rug acreage and doesn’t quite look right. Less is more in this case, and a few inches of rug under the front legs of a sofa is more than enough!
- Standard Sizes: For a typical living room, a rug size of 200 x 300cm or 270 x 360cm is often ideal. Most three-seater sofas are about 3 meters wide, so you’ll want to position the longer end of the rug under the sofa (many people get confused about this!). If you have the space, try to ensure the rug extends beyond the seating area but leaves around 30-45 cm of floor space around the perimeter for balance.
- Layering Options: Consider layering smaller rugs on top of a neutral, larger base rug for added texture and visual interest. This is a smart way to showcase a really luxe, high quality rug in a smaller size, while still making it look intentional!
BEDROOM: CREATING A COZY RETREAT
Picking the right rug size for a bedroom might actually be the most challenging task of all, because it can be such a personal choice. Here are some of our top tips to help you decide:
- Under the Bed: Choose a rug that fits under the bed while also extending outwards on either side and at the foot of the bed. For queen beds, a 170 x 240cm rug works well. For king beds, consider a larger size such as 200 x 300cm or even 270 x 360cm if the room is large enough.
- Runners: If you prefer runners, your job just got a lot simpler. Place them on either side of the bed for a cozy, rustic touch. The best part? You can easily repurpose these rugs for another part of your home – runners are ideal for the commitment-phobes out there!
- Spacing Considerations: The last thing you want is to have a rug overwhelm your space and make you feel like you’re drowning in fabric. Leave a few inches of exposed floor space around the edges of the room for a polished look.
DINING AREA: SETTING THE SCENE
We often see clients shy away from using a rug in their dining room because they’re concerned about stains, but to that we say, no longer! There are so many stain-resistant, darker toned options available these days. A rug in the dining area can define the space and provide a visual anchor, effortlessly separating it from the rest of the room. Here’s how to pick the right rug size for your dining room:
- Table and Chairs: The rug should be large enough to accommodate the dining table and chairs, with extra room for pulling out chairs comfortably. Measure the table and add 60-75 cm on each side to find the optimal rug size. We generally recommend 170 x 240cm for a four-seater table, and 200 x 300cm for a six-seater table.
- Shape Matching: Match the rug shape to the shape of your dining table. For instance, use a rectangular rug for a rectangular table and a round rug for a round table. Pro tip: round rugs and tables are great space-savers, if you’re designing for a tight fit.
- Clearance: Ensure the rug extends beyond the table to create a cohesive look and protect the floor from chair movement.
